Ana Mercedes Asuaje de Rugeles

Musical studies

Musical studies with Franco Medina and Ascanio Negretti, and composition with Vicente Emilio Sojo at the José Ángel Lamas Music School in Caracas. Thereafter, she did further music studies at the Catholic University of Washington in years 1948-1950. During this last year, she also studies with Jacobo Ficher in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She subsequently travels to Paris and lastly to Geneva where she studied musical pedagogy.
She was teacher, sub-director and director of the Juan Manuel Olivares Music School in Caracas (1953-1975). She also was broadcasting producer for the National Radio of Venezuela for eleven years where she drafted and edited broadcasting music transmissions.
She was also a founding member of both, the Pequeña Mavare Orchestra and the Schola Cantorum Choir Ensemble and Academic Director of the Venezuelan National Youth Orchestra (1978-1986).

Awards 
- Second Prize from the Ministry of Communications 1946's Venezuelan Romantic Song Competition with her song Plenitud (Fullness)
- First Prize from the II AVAC Venezuelan Music Competition year 1955, with her song El pájaro carpintero (The woodpecker).
