Translator’s Note
When translating the SVMC (Venezuelan Society for Contemporary Music)
Spanish internet web site into English was then proposed and thus
decided, a big question raised.... What sense would it have had to
translate all the curricula and music life activities, and not
translating the composers’ compositions’ (the many!) titles...?
Probably, for the non-Spanish speaking interested users, and in
detriment to their achieving a composer’s music and personality closest
portrait, none. But this would lead to another uncertainty...How daring
must a translator be to try to approach, approximate, reach, discover
the composer’s music thinking and/or motive, idea, poetry, etc..., in
order to attempt accurately render into English his utmost primary
original light and/or
intention?
Very much.
But that is a translator’s job. And in this case, it shouldn’t have
been so difficult since the translator is also a composer himself; but
believe me - literal translations apart -, this was never a fact.
Therefore, I must in advance apologize to all composers for perhaps
sometimes daring too much - if so was the case - wrongly interpreting
subjectivities that would irreparably lead to distort own feelings, and
the users’ own honest information interests.
From the heart, in complete and great respect to you all, I did my very best to avoid such possibility.
Sincerely yours,
Alfredo Marcano
